The City of Edinburg honored the late coach Al Ogletree Monday with a street dedication in his name. A portion of north Sugar Road was renamed Coach Al Ogletree Way right at its intersection with Schunior Street.
The former baseball head coach of legacy institution University of Texas–Pan American, who served from 1968-1997, was known for his impact on the baseball program’s history, compiling a record of 1,217 wins. He currently holds the title of 38th winningest coach in NCAA history and was inducted into eight hall of fames in his lifetime. Ogletree died June 2019 at the age of 89.
“This dedication says it all,” said Rick Villarreal, former player under coach Ogletree. “Not just the honor itself but the name Ogletree Way. The coach Al way was always done with dignity, respect and love for the game and players.”
Ramiro Garza Jr., mayor of Edinburg, speaks during the honoring ceremony of coach Al Ogletree Monday on the UTRGV Baseball Stadium parking lot on the Edinburg campus. “Today’s street dedication is more than just a name on a sign,” Garza said. “It’s a symbol of gratitude.” Draya Rios/THE RIDERShown are the UTRGV Baseball Team and Michel Matlock (center), head of operations for the team, during the honoring ceremony for Al Ogletree, late coach of legacy institution the University of Texas–Pan American, Monday on the UTRGV Baseball Stadium parking lot on the Edinburg campus.
