Newspaper Editor-in-chief
Reports to the newspaper adviser; oversees production of the UTRGV student newspaper; conducts weekly staff assignments and assignments status meetings; helps generate story ideas, delegates direction of stories, graphics and photos; writes news and feature articles, editorials and columns; edits copy to ensure accuracy, objectivity, balance and fairness; enforces deadlines, design news and feature pages with the help of staff; reviews newspaper proofs before submission to printer; other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Leadership, strong writing/editing, organization, communication, deadline management, teamwork, basic design knowledge, and sound news judgment.

Social Media Editor
Reports to the newspaper advisers and editor in chief; promotes the newspaper and its website daily on social media outlets, including Facebook, X and Instagram; grows the newspaper’s social media fan base across campuses by engaging audience with daily posts; designs the newspaper’s social media pages and updates the design as needed; follows social media guidelines; responds to questions from social media audience with guidance from the editor in chief; produces weekly reports on newspaper’s social media analytics; attends weekly staff meetings; other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Creativity, communication, consistency, basic design skills, analytics awareness, teamwork, and time management.

Online Editor
Reports to the newspaper faculty adviser and editor-in-chief; posts articles, photos and videos on the newspaper’s website; ensures posted items are accurate, objective, balanced and fair; designs, completes and posts each online publication by the deadline; maintains the online PDF archive of the newspaper; updates the newspaper website on a daily basis; trains a newspaper staff member as a backup for posting articles, photos and videos; ensures the security of the newspaper website; maintains online video archive; attends weekly staff meetings; other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Strong writing/editing, web/HTML skills, SEO knowledge, Photoshop experience, organization, attention to detail, and reliability.

Copy Editor
Reports to the newspaper editor in chief and faculty adviser; edits copy to ensure accuracy, objectivity, balance and fairness; writes headlines and captions; follows Associated Press style; proofreads pages; completes assignments by deadline; attends weekly staff meetings.

Qualifications: Strong grammar/editing, AP style knowledge, attention to detail, time management, and reliability.

Sports Reporter
Reports to the newspaper adviser and editor-in-chief; writes sports news and feature articles as well as columns; includes at least three sources in all articles; ensures accuracy, objectivity, balance and fairness in all articles; follows Associated Press style; completes assignments by deadline; attends weekly staff meetings; other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Strong writing, interviewing, AP style knowledge, UTRGV sports knowledge, time management, and reliability.

Editorial cartoonist/graphics artist
Reports to the newspaper adviser and editor-in-chief; writes news and feature articles. Includes at least three sources in all articles. Ensures accuracy, objectivity, balance and fairness in all articles; follows Associated Press style. Completes assignments by deadline. Attends weekly staff meetings; other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Strong writing, interviewing, AP style knowledge, time management, reliability, and attention to detail.

Photographer
Reports to the newspaper adviser and editor-in-chief; writes news and feature articles. Includes at least three sources in all articles. Ensures accuracy, objectivity, balance and fairness in all articles; follows Associated Press style. Completes assignments by deadline. Attends weekly staff meetings; other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Strong photography skills, Photoshop knowledge, composition/lighting awareness, writing ability, reliability, and time management.

Arts and entertainment reporter
Reports to the newspaper advisers and editor in chief; covers arts and entertainment events and issues across UTRGV campuses; ensures articles are accurate, objective, balanced and fair; completes assignments by deadline; attends weekly staff meetings; other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Strong writing, reporting, interviewing, time management, attention to detail, and reliability.

Spanish reporter
Reports to the newspaper adviser and editor-in-chief; writes and edits feature articles in Spanish; follows “El Manual de Estilo de la AP”; translates articles from Spanish to English or English to Spanish; completes assignments and page design by deadline; attends weekly staff meetings; other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Bilingual writing/editing, translation skills, AP style knowledge, attention to detail, and time management.

Reporter
Reports to the newspaper adviser and editor-in-chief; writes news and feature articles; includes at least three sources in all articles; ensures accuracy, objectivity, balance and fairness in all articles; follows Associated Press style; completes assignments by deadline; attends weekly staff meetings; other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Strong writing, multi-source reporting, AP style knowledge, attention to detail, and reliability.


NOTE: All Student Media employees must be enrolled full-time at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley during the their semester of employment and at least 1 hour during the summer sessions. Some positions may require a valid driver’s license.
