The UTRGV Women’s Basketball Team was defeated tonight by the University of Texas at Austin Longhorns 110-45 at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg.
Head coach Lane Lord said UT played “really awesome.”
“It was awesome for our community, it was awesome for our university,” Lord said. “You get Texas down here, it doesn’t happen very often and we are very fortunate for that opportunity and I am proud of our group.”
He said Texas is No. 2 for a reason.
“I think they are the number one team in the country; we got to see the best tonight,” Lord said. “So thankful for [head coach Vic] Schaefer and the University of Texas for bringing their squad down here in the [Rio Grande] Valley.”
Graduate guard Rori Harmon marked 14 assists and 6 points. Harmon said seeing the crowd “makes you want to play for them.”
“When you hear them call your name … it’s just great,” she said. “It is always really good playing Rio Grande Valley here, it just feels like a whole family here and so that’s cool for us.”
Schaefer said he loves bringing the team down to the Valley.
“I wouldn’t do it for any other than coach Lord,” he said. “I think he is a tremendous coach. … I would not do this for anyone else; we love coming down here.”

By the end of the first half, Texas already had a 50-point lead over UTRGV. Carlton was leading the Longhorns with 18 points. In contrast, the leading scorer for the Vaqueros was sophomore guard Kayla Lorenz with 6 points.
Vaqueros sophomore guard Gianna Angiolet led the overall game in 3-pointers attempted with four, but had only been able to mark one out of those four attempts.
The third quarter followed at a slower pace compared to the previous two with UT only gaining 11 points; UTRGV only gained 13 and was falling behind by 48 points.
To close out the night, Longhorns junior forward Madison Booker led the night with 28 points, just one point shy from her career high. Carlton followed behind with 21 points.
Shaefer said these are times he does not take for granted.
“To be able to share them with the people in South Texas is really cool and I do enjoy coming down here,” he said.
