The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between Oct. 27 and Nov. 2.
Oct. 27
2:32 p.m.: An officer responded to a report of a suspicious man selling items from an ice chest outside the University Library on the Edinburg campus. The officer checked the area but could not locate him.
4:41 p.m.: An employee reported a blue tarp at the rear of the Vaquero Plaza Building on the Brownsville campus and expressed concern someone might be loitering in the area. Officers searched but were unable to locate anyone. The tarp had been removed by an employee.
Oct. 28
12:13 p.m.: A student reported his bicycle stolen from the Unity Hall bike rack on the Edinburg campus. The case is under investigation.
11:16 p.m.: An officer responded to a man and woman looking into vehicles in Lot E-37 on the Edinburg campus. Both fled on foot when officers approached and were later detained. It was determined the two non-affiliated juveniles entered an employee’s vehicle and stole items. They were charged with burglary of a vehicle and evading arrest and transported to the Hidalgo County Juvenile Center.
11:33 p.m.: An officer responded to The Village Apartments on the Edinburg campus after a student reported donuts left at her dorm door were taken by another student she knew. The student agreed to pay for the donuts, and the incident was resolved on scene.
Oct. 29
2:43 a.m.: While on patrol, an officer observed a transformer emitting sparks in Lot B-3 on the Brownsville campus. The Brownsville Public Utilities Board and Fire Department were notified and addressed the issue.
12:56 p.m.: Officers responded to a call about a suspicious man near the University Library on the Edinburg campus. They found a non-affiliated man near the Bronc Trail who said he was practicing martial arts and meant no harm. He was escorted off campus.
Oct. 30
8:09 a.m.: An officer responded to an incident in the University Library on the Brownsville campus after a student made concerning comments to an employee. The student apologized and clarified the comment was not true. No crime occurred.
10:54 a.m.: A non-affiliated man reported purchasing a Microsoft Surface Pro at a garage sale. When powered on, it displayed as UTRGV property. A check showed it was reported stolen in 2021. The case is under investigation.
Oct. 31
1:41 p.m.: An employee reported striking a column with a university vehicle at the Academic Support Facility loading dock on the Edinburg campus, causing minor damage. No injuries were reported.
Nov. 1
12:37 p.m.: An officer responded to a man pacing back and forth in Lot B-1 on the Brownsville campus. It was determined he was waiting for a friend attending class.
Nov. 2
3:37 p.m.: Officers observed a fallen door at a Chartwells kiosk in the Engineering Building on the Edinburg campus, exposing a point-of-sale system and food. A supervisor confirmed the door was already damaged and verified no forced entry or missing items.
5:51 p.m.: Officers responded to an active fire alarm in the Engineering Building on the Edinburg campus. The panel showed a malfunctioning water pump. The building was inspected and cleared with no issues found.
