Spring Break Lu’Au, organized by Student Rights and Responsibilities, prepared students for spring break by providing information on how to stay safe through local resources and organizations.
The event had the participation of several organizations and departments, such as Casa Orgullo, South Padre Island Beach Patrol and the University Police Department, according to Priscilla Juarez, a student assistant for Student Rights and Responsibilities.
“The Spring Break Lu’Au is a campus outreach event for students to get involved and learn about the dangers of spring break,” Juarez said. “It helps promote a safe community environment for our students.”
She said one of the activities available for students was the tipsy driving carts.
“The University Police Department will be having the tipsy driving carts,” Juarez said. “It’s like simulating what it feels like to drive drunk; drive while under the influence.”
Students at the event shared their advice on staying safe during spring break.
Catherine Ramirez, an integrated health science senior, said to be wary of others, “You know yourself, but you don’t know other people’s intentions.”
Barbie Rivas, a biology sophomore, said she recommends students know their surroundings.
“Know where you are all the time and always be by somebody, don’t ever be by yourself,” Rivas said.
