The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between Jan. 23 and 29.
Jan. 23
11:14 a.m.: A student reported someone staring at her on two separate occasions near the bus stop by the Student Services Building on the Edinburg campus. The student also reported she believed the person was following her to the bus stop but never tried to contact her. The case is under investigation.
11:23 a.m.: A non-affiliated man contacted an employee on the Edinburg campus stating he had purchased an iPad from Amazon that appeared to belong to UTRGV when he tried to log in. The employee checked with Assets Management and found the iPad was not listed as UTRGV property.
Jan. 24
11:52 a.m.: A Valley Regional Medical Center employee reported that a student was in the hospital receiving treatment for an animal bite she sustained on the Brownsville campus. Officers responded to the location to contact the student who had left prior to their arrival. The case is under investigation.
12:50 p.m.: UTRGV police dispatch observed four individuals via closed-circuit TV cameras crossing the border fence near Lot B-1 on the Brownsville campus. Officers and U.S. Border Patrol arrived on scene and apprehended three of the four men. The fourth individual was not located.
Jan. 25
8:11 a.m.: An unknown man was making concerning comments to the staff of the Student Union on the Edinburg campus. Officers spoke with the non-affiliated man, who was found to be suffering from a medical condition. Emergency Medical Services arrived and the man was taken to the hospital. It was determined that the man had a criminal history and was issued a criminal trespass warning for all UTRGV properties.
9:18 a.m.: An employee reported striking a light fixture base while operating a university-owned utility vehicle near the Student Union on the Brownsville campus. No injuries were reported.
6:42 p.m.: Officers responded to a fire alarm in the Science Building on the Edinburg campus. Officers arrived on the scene and evacuated the building. Environmental Health and Safety determined the alarm was triggered by a faulty sensor located inside a mechanical room, reset the fire panel and deemed the building safe for reentry.
Jan. 26
4:33 p.m.: An employee reported that an unknown man walked into a classroom in the Student Academic Center on the Edinburg campus and took a photo of the surveillance camera with his phone before leaving the area. Officers received a description of the man and checked the surrounding areas but did not locate anyone. The case is under review.
Jan. 27
11:21 p.m.: A student reported hearing his front door handle being turned in the Village Apartments on the Edinburg campus. Officers checked the area but did not observe any unusual activity. Camera footage was also reviewed and no one was seen around the studentโs door.
Jan. 29
3:21 a.m.: A U.S. Border Patrol agent notified an officer of a woman who was observed crossing the border fence behind the Interdisciplinary Academic Building on the Brownsville campus. Upon checking the area, the officer found that the border patrol agent had already apprehended the woman, who was identified as a Mexican national.
11:20 a.m.: University police received information from another law enforcement agency regarding a child pornography case. The case is under investigation.
1:39 p.m.: An officer investigated a suspicious voice message left on a university office phone on the Edinburg campus. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the message was left by a mental health consumer who was not affiliated with the university.
