The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between Feb. 8 and 14.
Feb. 8
12:05 p.m.: A staff member working at the University Center in Edinburg reported he had ordered two Apple iPads in August 2021 but only received one. The case is under investigation.
3:34 p.m.: Officers responded to Lot E-36 in reference to a disturbance involving two students. An investigation revealed that the involved parties had been arguing over problems in their relationship. A report was generated for documentation purposes.
Feb. 9
2:27 p.m.: A student reported her bicycle was stolen from the bicycle rack on the west side of the Student Services Building on the Edinburg campus. An investigation revealed that the bicycle had been picked up in December and submitted to the Police Department for safekeeping after being found unsecured. The student was notified and arrangements were made to have her pick up her bicycle.
5:56 p.m.: A staff member reported a binder had been stolen from the lobby area of the Academic Support Facility Complex building in Edinburg. Through investigation, the affiliated suspect was identified and the stolen item was recovered. No criminal charges were filed. The case will be referred for administrative review.
Feb. 10
11:21 a.m.: A student reported two items she had ordered online had been delivered to Unity Hall in Edinburg but were stolen prior to her picking them up. An investigation confirmed the items had not been delivered.
11:58 a.m.: A staff member reported damage to his vehicle while on the Brownsville campus but was unsure of where or when his vehicle had been damaged. A report was generated for documentation purposes.
4:06 p.m.: A staff member working at the University Financial Services building in Edinburg reported the bank had flagged a check bearing the university account information as fraudulent. There was no monetary loss to the university. The case is under investigation.
9:08 p.m.: Officers assisted the Edinburg Police Department in searching for a fleeing suspect in a hit-and-run accident that had occurred at an off-campus location. The officers were able to locate the non-affiliated male suspect in the grassy area south of the University Soccer Complex. The man was subsequently detained and released to the custody of Edinburg police.
Feb. 11
7:24 a.m.: A faculty member reported the glass panel of a door in a conference room at the Music, Science and Learning Center in Brownsville was damaged. A work order was placed to have the door fixed.
9:28 a.m.: A staff member reported that on Feb. 10 while at the Main Building in Brownsville, she saw two men, dressed in camouflage and carrying rifles on campus. The staff member reported the men took pictures with a promotional vehicle that was on campus and left the area. A report was generated for documentation purposes.
4:46 p.m.: An officer observed a man with an active criminal trespass warning walking through Lot E-8. The officer confirmed the criminal trespass warning was active and placed the man under arrest for criminal trespass. The man was then transported to the Edinburg Municipal Jail for booking procedures.
5:22 p.m.: The Edinburg Fire Department and an officer responded to the Dining and Ballroom Complex in reference to a gas leak. An investigation confirmed the gas leak was coming from a stove in the kitchen. A work order was placed to have the stove repaired.
Feb. 12
1:52 a.m.: The Edinburg Fire Department and an officer responded to the Village Apartments in reference to an active fire alarm. The fire department concluded the fire alarm pull station had malfunction that caused the alarm to activate. The fire department reset the fire panel and deemed the area safe for reentry. A work order was placed for the fire alarm pull station.
Feb. 13
12:57 a.m.: An officer responded to the Casa Bella Apartments in Brownsville in reference to a noise complaint. A report was generated for documentation purposes.
5:59 p.m.: The Edinburg Fire Department and an officer responded to the Dining and Ballroom Complex in reference to a gas leak. An investigation confirmed there was not a gas leak at the location but that the sensor had activated due to the batteries being low.
7:38 p.m.: A staff member on the Edinburg campus reported losing his issued flashlight while assisting another law enforcement agency in searching for a man who fled the scene of an accident. A report was generated for documentation purposes.
Feb. 14
3:26 a.m.: A female student reported being sexually assaulted by a male student at Unity Hall in Edinburg. The case is under investigation.
11:14 a.m.: A staff member on the Brownsville campus reported an employee had not been at work and was concerned due to there being no communication from the employee. An officer was able to make contact with the employee and confirmed he was OK. A report was generated for documentation purposes.
12:40 p.m.: An officer responded to Lot E-25 in reference to a two-vehicle collision involving students. No injuries were reported, only minor damage to both vehicles.
1:14 p.m.: A staff member in Edinburg reported losing her university-issued keys while in Arizona. A report was generated for documentation purposes.
1:52 p.m.: An officer responded to an off-campus location near the Texas Southmost College Performing Arts Center in Brownsville in reference to a non-affiliated unconscious woman. Emergency medical services and an officer with the Brownsville Police Department also arrived at the location. The woman regained consciousness and was transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center for further evaluation.
