In Spring 2023, UTRGV had an enrollment of 29,704 students; 29,789 in Spring 2024 and 31,510 in Spring 2025.
Maggie Hinojosa, senior vice president for Strategic Enrollment and Student Affairs, said there is a slight decrease from fall to spring semesters.
โThe fall is always where you have the largest enrollment,โ Hinojosa said. โIn fall, we were at around 34,000 and so, for spring, weโre at 31,500. So, you donโt technically increase from fall to spring.โ
Census Day was Wednesday.
According to Hinojosa, there are currently 26,652 undergraduate students and 4,837 graduate and professional degree students, which include masterโs, doctoral, School of Medicine and School of Podiatric Medicine students.

โTypically in the spring, we donโt have a huge transfer number โฆ less than a hundred students that are transferred,โ she said. โYou donโt get a lot of mid-year transfers. Typically, transfers are going to happen in the fall.โ
Frida Martinez, a social work junior, said the student population is getting too big for campus and its facilities.
โI think one of the major problems over the last couple of years has been parking space and โฆ it makes us late for class,โ Martinez said. โI definitely do think that they donโt have to accept every student that applies here โฆ just because it is pretty hectic here in the morning, sometimes.โ
Christian De La Garza, a civil engineering junior, said he feels the university is not that populated.
โI always see empty spaces in my classrooms or in my online classes,โ De La Garza said. โThereโs always room for more people. I see it more here [on] the Edinburg campus than [on] the Brownsville campus because they have smaller classes, so it looks more compact. But here in Edinburg โฆ I see more empty spaces.โ

Alejandra Rojas, a psychology freshman, said there are a lot of students but plenty of space.
โI think there just needs to be more parking space, like, more availability for people to park,โ Rojas said.
Derek Rios, a computer science senior, said space is more of a problem on the Brownsville campus than on the Edinburg campus.
โI think in some aspects โฆ in some classes, in certain hours, you canโt find a spot or trying to find a facility to sit in is worse in Brownsville,โ Rios said.
Hinojosa said the university shows continuous support to the students throughout their entire academic journey.
โFrom admitting them, to helping them register, assisting with financial assistance, to providing them services through our Dean of Students office, there is just a variety of avenues in which we support our students,โ she said. โThere isnโt a single area that doesnโt do that.โ
