UTRGV Men’s Basketball Team senior forward Lesley Varner II is one of four players representing the Western Athletic Conference in the online 3X3U National Championship finals against the Mid-American Conference.

Varner is joined by Grand Canyon University senior guard Carlos Johnson, New Mexico State University’s senior guard Trevelin Queen and California Baptist University’s senior forward De’jon Davis.

The Twitter poll allows fans to vote until 9:22 p.m. today for who they think would win the tournament, giving the champions bragging rights.

This tournament was originally scheduled for April 3-5 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Sports have always been a good unifier,” Jonah Goldberg, associate athletic director for communications, said.

“Right now, not having live sports has definitely left a void in a lot of people’s lives, but to be able to have a contest like this where it can engage people to think about what it would’ve been like if these teams had gone against each other,” Goldberg said.

The WAC earned 442 votes with 62.2% overall in the quarterfinals and 608 in the semifinals with 54.1%.

Varner averaged 15.6 points, 6 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.5 steals this season according to goutrgv.com.

“The last four seconds of your career ended with a game winning shot, that’s a storybook ending right there,” Goldberg said when speaking about Varner.

“Hopefully, we can give him an epilogue to that storybook by winning this 3X3 tournament,” Goldberg said.
