Dior Williams, a freshman sprinter from Missouri City, Texas, was named the Southland Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the Week on April 16 after winning two events and setting two meet records at the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Cactus Cup. Williams ran a personal-best 13.28 in the 100-meter hurdles, the third-fastest time in program history, and helped UTRGV win the 4×100-meter relay in a meet-record 45.56.
Q: What has been your favorite part about your first season at UTRGV so far?
A: “Probably just the team, getting to meet everybody and getting to run and PR every week.”
Q: Who has been one of the biggest supporters in your journey, and what have they meant to you?
A: “Probably my parents. They keep me motivated and encouraged every time I feel like I’m going through something. If I feel like I can’t get through it, they just keep encouraging me.”
Q: What has helped you feel more comfortable as a freshman on the team?
A: “The upperclassmen–they make me feel like home.”
Q: Outside of the results, what has track taught you about yourself?
A: “That anything is possible. Things can seem impossible but, if you really put your mind to it, you can focus and block out everything that’s around you.”
Q: What is one memory from this season that has stood out to you the most?
A: “When we won [the Southland Conference Indoor Championship]. This was our first year winning since track has been here, so that was a good moment.”
Q: What is one fun fact about you that people may not know?
A: “I used to cheer, so I can flip.”
Q: What is something people should know about your season so far?
A: “I’m currently first in the Southland Conference in the 100-meter hurdles.”
