The Brownsville Accounting Association provides internship and networking opportunities for students pursuing an accounting degree, according to Samuel Barrera, vice president of the organization.
“We want to get [students] those internships, all that good stuff, so that they can secure a position in the future,” Barrera said.
The club organizes events with guest speakers who touch on accounting and business related topics.
“We have brought in FBI special agents to talk about auditing and fraud,” he said.
Barrera added they also bring in local firms from the Rio Grande Valley and big firms from outside, such as Deloitte and KPMG.
Outside of guest speaking, the club hosts networking events, volunteer projects and socials.
“We’ve been real big advocates for Sombrero Fest and Beer Fest,” the club’s vice president said. “Those are the two main things we do.”
Barrera said he was personally motivated to join because, after he went to his first meetings, it felt like “this is a place that really appreciates everyone.”
“We’ve had a lot of people be successful post graduation,” he said. “I know we have people working at the Big Four accounting firms and some public firms here.”
The club’s goals for the semester include attaining more internships.
“Right now, it is recruiting season, so we want to set people up for, you know, Summer 2026 or 2027,” Barrera said.
Students who are interested in joining can attend one of the club’s meetings which take place from 5 to 6 p.m. every other Wednesday in Music, Science and Learning Center Room 1.111 on the Brownsville campus.
