The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between Jan. 5 and 14.
Jan. 5
6:11 p.m.: Officers responded to a report of an odor of burned rubber in the University Center on the Edinburg campus. No smoke or fire was found. The Edinburg Fire Department advised shutting down the air conditioning units until they could be checked by facilities and deemed the building safe for re-entry.
Jan. 6
12:05 a.m.: An officer observed markings made with an indelible marker on a service door in the Engineering Building on the Edinburg campus.
2:11 a.m.: An officer responded to an active fire alarm in the Main Building on the Brownsville campus. No smoke or fire was found, and it was determined the alarm was caused by a faulty smoke detector. Officers later responded to a second alarm at the same location with the same findings.
9:52 a.m.: A student reported damage to her bicycle after it was left secured at a bike rack near the Student Services Building on the Edinburg campus.
Jan. 7
1:03 p.m.: An employee reported a suspected vehicle tampering while parked in Lot E-16 on the Edinburg campus. An officer observed the oil plug had been removed, the oil drained and a tracking device attached to the vehicle. The employee suspected a non-affiliated ex-boyfriend.
3:51 p.m.: An employee reported two men skateboarding in the Performing Arts Building on the Edinburg campus. Officers found no property damage and were unable to locate the individuals.
Jan. 8
12:57 p.m.: A student reported losing an electronic tablet off campus in November 2025 but said it pinged near Sabal Hall on the Brownsville campus two days prior.
Jan. 9
4:37 p.m.: A student reported his unattended vehicle was struck by an unknown vehicle in Lot H-5 on the Harlingen campus. The case is under investigation.
10:15 p.m.: An employee reported a vehicle struck the Casa Bella main gate on the Brownsville campus, pushing it off the rail system. No damage was observed, and the gate was reset. After reviewing CCTV footage, the vehicle and student driver were identified. The student said she attempted to contact a resident assistant.
Jan. 10
3:10 a.m.: Officers responded to a burglary alarm in the UT Health RGV Pediatric Specialty Clinic in Edinburg. Officers found the building secured.
Jan. 12
12:59 p.m.: Officers responded to a possible theft of a UTRGV golf cart in the Liberal Arts Building North on the Edinburg campus. It was later discovered that the cart was relocated by an employee.
Jan. 13
5:21 p.m.: A student reported that his bike was stolen from the bike rack outside the Health & Physical Education II Building on the Edinburg campus. He said the bike was left secured with a lock. The case is under investigation.
7:20 p.m.: Officers responded to an active fire alarm in a dorm inside Unity Hall on the Edinburg campus. After inspection, no smoke or fire was observed. Environment, Health, and Safety arrived and reset the smoke detector. The area was cleared for re-entry.
Jan. 14
9:49 a.m.: Officers on patrol identified a man in Lot E-36 on the Edinburg campus matching the suspect description of a theft reported the previous day. Officers confirmed his involvement and found drug paraphernalia on him, which he attempted to destroy. The man was arrested and taken to the Edinburg Police Department Jail Facility.
