As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, University Recreation will host its annual Power in Pink event, described as a high-energy cardiovascular experience designed to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention while promoting overall wellness.
“This is something that impacts everyone, not just women, also men,” said Fay Kennan, UREC fitness and wellness manager. “It’s a very preventable disease, so [we] want students to take a more serious note on their health.”
The event will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Texas Southmost College Recreation Center in Brownsville and 6 p.m. Thursday in the University Recreation center on the Edinburg campus.
Kennan said it will feature a mix of movement, music and fun. Attendees can expect a Zumba dance party, cycling sessions and other fitness demonstrations, all activities meant to get hearts pumping.
Participants are encouraged to come in athletic attire.
“We’re going to have some instructors come in and teach different classes, so there’s gonna be a lot of fun on the main gym,” Kennan said. “[Even if] you’re not a dancer, but you still want to get a nice workout, we’re going to have our bikes for anybody to enjoy.”
In addition to the workouts, the event will feature a tabling session where students can connect with campus partners such as the UT Health RGV Student Health and Counseling Center to learn more about wellness resources and preventive care. The first 100 attendees will receive a commemorative event T-shirt.
“Just because you’re young doesn’t mean you’re not at risk,” Kennan said. “If there’s one thing I want [students] to take away from this event, it’s to go get your checkups. You can come to the Student Health Center right here. It’s a great place to start.”
Andrea Espinosa, a UREC student intern, said the event’s atmosphere is one of good energy.
“There’s a lot of hype around it,” Espinosa said. “Anything that has to do with cardiovascular activity is going to get your blood pumping.”
Kennan said the event continues to grow each year, with more than 100 participants across campuses.
“We serve students, but the family component is just as important,” she said. “It’s a way for parents to support the students, support us and support the community.”
Kennan emphasized the Power in Pink event is free and open to all UTRGV students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members. Guests from off campus can receive a parking pass upon arrival.
