Cameron County counted 244,901 registered voters for the midterm election.
Flores on his Facebook website released a statement conceding to Gonzales for U.S. Rep. District 34.
“To everyone feeling disappointed tonight, I want you to remember this: One election does not define us,” he said. “One setback does not erase what we’ve accomplished. And one difficult night should never steal our hope for tomorrow.”
Flores hosted a watch party in Harlingen during election night.
Flores said “No one likes a defeat,” and he did not expect the current voting results.
“The voters have spoken. We respect their division,” Flores said. “We thank everybody who partook in the democratic process throughout Texas [District] 34, and I congratulate and wish [Vicente Gonzalez] the best of the game of representing Texas [District] 34 and south Texas families.”
According to Remi Garza, Elections Admin for Cameron County, results are expected to be finalized at 10:30 p.m.
Garza said the turnout for the midterm election is “extremely high” and a possible record for the county.
“We’d have to look back through the history of it,” he said. “But, 40% of our registered voters came out when normally it’s about 34%. So, it’s a good indication.”
He added for midterm elections, Cameron County had a 50% increase during early voting.
“We didn’t quite get it that much during election day, but still, overall, we got under 100,000 voters. And to me, that’s fantastic for a midterm,” Garza said.
